Rural reforms and agricultural productivity in Laos

Article Abstract:

Laos' implementation of rural reforms, and these reforms' impact on agricultural production, is analyzed in the light of the country's shift from a socialist state to a market-oriented one. The macroeconomic policies pursued, sector-specific measures carried out, their timing and sequencing and their overall effect on agricultural performance are evaluated in the context of this transition. Some policy conclusions and problems encountered are also discussed.

Home-based industries: an alternative strategy for household security in rural Zimbabwe

Article Abstract:

The multifunctional feature of rural-based industries is posited as a potential alternative strategy for attaining household security in rural Zimbabwe. Since rural enterprise households have been proven to be economically viable, they can be tapped not only to assure a reliable supply of farm products but also to provide other basic human needs. This 'grassroots' approach can be particularly useful in areas where agricultural production is low.
