Sages, ministers, and rebels: narratives from early China concerning the initial creation of the state

Article Abstract:

Many conflicting narratives describing the development of the state appeared during the Warring States period in China. These narratives cannot be traced back to any unified underlying myth or symbolism, but instead should be understood in relation to historical debates , tensions and concerns of the Warring States period. Narratives about the emergence of the state reflect concerns over the state' s use of organized violence and its possible discontinuity with the natural world.
