The PRC and Taiwan: Fujian's faltering united front

Article Abstract:

A study of the relations between Taiwanese investors and Chinese political authorities in China's Fujian Province reveals several interest points on the prospects of increased China-Taiwan interaction. Firstly, the study indicates that economic and political interdependence between the two parties are not directly proportional. Secondly, the study shows that despite their small size, investments from Taiwanese firms are more likely to be accepted because of dominance of localism in China. Lastly, the study reveals that economic liberalization and localism can undermine the goals of a centralized, totaliltarian system such as China.

The Taiwan Strait crisis; its crux and solutions

Article Abstract:

Conflicting policy guidelines between Mainland China and Taiwan was the cause of the March 1996 Taiwan strait crisis. The communist Chinese hed military exercises to pressure Taipei to abandon its plan of campaigning for international recognition. Mainland China knows that this is a clear violation of the one China policy; its continuation will delay plans of reunification. The US role in this situation is to continue recognizing the one China policy and help both countries find ways to diffuse the tension that has threatened stability of the region.

Dynamics of Taiwan-mainland China economic relations: the role of private firms

Article Abstract:

It is argued that the existing political economy between Taiwan and mainland China cannot fully be described by the realist point of view on economic statecraft. Taiwan's economic policy toward China reflects interaction between corporations and state that cannot be wholly explained by the notion of state control. The role of the business community on cross-country economic interactions and Taiwan's economic statecraft toward mainland China are evaluated.
