Export processing zones in Asia: a comparative study

Article Abstract:

A comparative study of export processing zones (EPZs) in Taiwan, South Korea and China reveals that the interplay of different variables is crucial to the success or failure of EPZs. In the case of Taiwan and South Korea, the international environment and prevailing domestic conditions have both been favorable when they established their EPZs in 1960s while government support in both countries has made EPZs perform beyond expectations. EPZs in China, on the other hand, had less conducive domestic conditions and the Chinese government adopted policies that failed to attract foreign investments. Thus, EPZs in China were unsuccessful.

Financial system reform and the currency crisis in East Asia

Article Abstract:

That the 1997 Asian crisis was caused by weak financial systems is a generally held belief. This has prompted some sectors to advocate for financial system reform to arrest the downward trend in the economies of the five countries hardest hit by the crisis, namely, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea and the Philippines. Since financial reform is known as a politically painful means of pursuing economic development, there are competing views as to its potential positive effect on the affected economies.

China's economic growth and the environment in the Asia-Pacific region

Article Abstract:

Regional and global environmental issues pose a challenge to China's continued economic growth. Acid rain in Japan and South Korea and industrial activities and wastes contributing to global warming are some of the detrimental effects of the rapid economic growth in China. Thus, Chinese officials must have the will to draft and implement environmental protection policies to prevent the encroachment of environmental issues on China's economic development.
