Segregation/integration: race, history, and theoretical practice in the American South

Article Abstract:

Many literary scholars, especially those in European countries, dismiss literature from the South as being only concerned with race relations and it is often characterized as backwards. European literary critics would be be surprised at the similarities between Southern and European culture and its forward-looking views on race and integration.

"An honour as well as a pleasure": dueling, violence, and race in 'Pudd'nhead Wilson'

Article Abstract:

Mark Twain's novel 'Pudd'nhead Wilson' sustains its ambiguity about behavior by not resolving the question of whether socialization or training is the more powerful influence on human action. The duel between the book's main characters heals a breach in the social order.
