Spirited away: The death of Little Eva and the farewell performances of "Katie King"

Article Abstract:

The spiritualism in the literary works published in the 1850s is discussed, with special reference to Harriet Beacher Stowe's 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' (1852), and Robert Dale Owen's 'Katie King'. The stylized representational modes that characterize the dying of many characters in literary texts and others cultural productions were appropriated by nineteenth-century spiritualists to perform farewells between spirits and the living within many seances that proliferated on both sides of the Atlantic from the late 1840s onward.
