Stabilization and trade reform in Mexico: 1983-1989

Article Abstract:

An analysis of import-substituting policies and the macroeconomic stabilization program in Mexico is presented. Substituting policies were instituted to help create industries that manufactured previously imported goods. The severe economic crisis faced by Mexico in the early 1980s prompted policy makers to adopt International Monetary Fund recommendations for a stabilization program. Studies were also conducted to gauge the effectivity of the maquiladora system.

Transactions activities and productivity growth in Mexico

Article Abstract:

Mexico registered a lower productivity growth during the 1970s and the early 1980s. A report made by Angus Maddison and Associates showed that Mexico's annual total factor productivity (TFP) growth, which measures a country's technological improvement and efficiency, during 1970s was only 1.2% compared to the 1950s record of 3%. The country's productivity worsened during the early 1980s as evidenced by a negative annual TFP growth.
