State, cultivator, land: determination of land tenures in early modern Japan reconsidered

Article Abstract:

Japan's early ruler, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, has significantly influenced the country's land tenure practices through his extensive land surveys. The system promoted ties between peasants and a given piece of land, which consequently gave villagers sufficient control over the land tenure process. However, central political authorities, land surveys and reparitions provide significant evidences for the determination of Japan's modern land tenure systems.

The disintegrating machinery of the modern: Akutagawa Ryunosuke's late writings

Article Abstract:

Akutagawa Ryunosuke committed suicide in July 1927 following 'vague anxiety'. Parallels have been drawn between Akutagawa's death and the end of the Taisho period, of which Akutagawa ranked amongst its most exceptional intellectuals. However, it is argued that rather than marking the end of an era, Akutagawa's late writings were fundamental to the formation of the subsequent period of Showa literature.
