Ties that (un)bind: families and states in premodern Southeast Asia

Article Abstract:

Power relations in the context of family ties served to deconstructs rather than construct the state structure in premodern Southeast Asia. The multidimensional nature of the family is instrumental in understanding their role as historical agents. The dynamic evolution of families and the ensuing competition between them served to undermine and unbind the structural links associated with the evolution of orderly states. The new perspective focuses on the political and power relations between family unit and deconstructs the king-centric concept of Southeast Asian states.
