Surface orientations in Vietnam: beyond histories of nation and region

Article Abstract:

Vietnam's history, which is usually interpreted as unified and coherent, is reexamined in the light of regional conflicts covering the 15th to the 19th century. The wars studied include Le Lo'i and Nguyen Anh Gia Long's conquests, the Tay Son, Le Mac and Trinh Nguyen wars. These regional wars defined the people and their outlook. Hence, during those times, being Vietnamese was expressed in different ways. It is also worth noting that regionalism reinforced Vietnam's national identity.

However, several flaws such as labor division, social stratification and poverty were made evident as a result of a detailed analysis of the textile industry.
