The 2004 general elections in Malaysia: A mandate to rule

Article Abstract:

The 2004 elections in Malaysia were an endorsement of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's style of moderate governance. Badawi's fight against corruption, insistence on public accountability, and shift from corporate mega-projects to emphasis on agro-based, rural projects, as well as his moderate Islamic stance and inclusive multiracial approach went down very well with every community of the Malaysian electorate and that support was translated into votes.

The Philippines in 2004: New mandate, daunting problems

Article Abstract:

National elections in the Philippines took place on May 10, 2004, providing incumbent president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo with a six-year electoral mandate and control of both houses of Congress and most of the local governmental positions. However, the Arroyo administration faced a worsening budget deficit and debt crisis, increased incidence of hunger and poverty, and unexpected twists in the country's relations with the United States.

The Philippines in 2007: ballots, budgets, and bribes

Article Abstract:

The article reviews the political instability faced by Philippines in 2007 plagued by violence and corruption scandals. The 2007 elections were violent with hundreds of people killed or injured but despite the ongoing political upheaval the economy was strong and it was the first time in three years that the House, Senate, and president came together to pass a budget.
