The British discovery of American history: War, liberalism and the Atlantic connection

Article Abstract:

The survival of Britain depended on a close alliance with the United States and it had precipitated frenetic governmental activity and intense interest in the United States throughout the media. The liberal academic veterans of the war insisted that the future of Britain lay with its wartime ally and Atlantic history was both an academic counterpoint to the special relationship and the foundation stone for the building of American history in Britain.

Visions of diversity: Cultural pluralism and the nation in the folk music revival movement of the United States and Canada, 1958-65

Article Abstract:

The concept of cultural pluralism in the North American folk music revival music of the 1960s is highlighted, with particular emphasis on the 'vision of diversity'. An attempt is made to explore the ways in which this vision was constructed, the reasons for its maintenance and its ultimate decline and the consequences of the decline for Anglophone Canadians and American musicians and enthusiasts alike.
