The author as a brand name: American literary figures and the Time cover story

Article Abstract:

An analysis of Time Magazine's cover stories profiling American literary figures reveals the tendency of the periodical to emphasize the commercial success of the authors and celebrate American greatness through the characterization of the personalities being covered. In addition, writers are usually portrayed in homogenous terms to make it easier for the magazine to appropriate the figures as expression of a collective national mood. It is also noteworthy that most of the writers covered are white, Protestant and members of upstate New York and New England bourgeois.

Don DeLillo's transatlantic dialogue with Sergei Eisenstein

Article Abstract:

Don DeLillo has expressed concern with the tendencies of modern media technology, especially that of television, video, and mass-produced Hollywood film, throughout his fictional corpus, which suggests a characteristically contemporary affinity between the criminal act and the manner of its simultaneous recording. Sergei Eisenstein, in 1924, directed a proliterian play entitled `Gas Works' which is appropriated by DeLillo in his novel, 'Underworld' as a means of articulating the democratic aptitude of film/art.
