The Qing court's Tibet connection: Lcang skya Rol pa'i rdo rje and the Qianlong Emperor

Article Abstract:

Interactions between the Qing court and Tibet during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736-95) are discussed, with a focus on the role of Lcang skya Rol pa'i rdo rje, chief administrative lama of Beijing. Topics include Lcang skya's first mission to Tibet (1734-5), his second mission to Tibet (1757-9), and the Panchen Lama's visit to Beijing (1779-80).

Late Qing perceptions of native opium

Article Abstract:

Historians imply that the Chinese clearly perceived opium as a health-destroying poison that British government had imposed upon Chinese to weaken their country. Most studies on China's opium debates during late Qing have focused on the importation of foreign opium prior to the Opium War.
