The 'Ise monogatari': a short cultural history

Article Abstract:

The ambiguous nature of the Japanese classic 'Ise monogatari' has been a source of anxiety, causing the work to be constantly commented upon, categorized and explained. The standard version of the work consists of 125 sections which combine prose and poetry featuring an unnamed man and woman. The hero of the work soon became identified with Ariwara no Narihara, who by the Kamakura period became deified as a god of sexual union. The Kamakura period also marked the beginning of the clear separation of commentaries from text. Responses to 'Ise monogatari' through the Tokugawa period are discussed.

In search of critical space: the path to monogatari criticism in the 'Mumyozoshi.' (Japan)

Article Abstract:

The 12th-century Japanese book 'Mumyozoshi' is the first formal critique of the genre of Japanese writing known as monogatari. Monogatari were prose and poetic tales composed throughout centuries of Japan's history, primarily by women. Evidence suggests that the first critical analysis of the monogatari was also written by a woman. It begins by discussing the link between religion and literature and proceeds to very carefully set the cultural stage for a critique of monogatari.
