The Kurdish question and the Middle East

Article Abstract:

Four books study the Kurdish question and its implications for the Middle East. 'A Modern History of Kurds' by David McDowall is the most comprehensive study available on the history of Kurds. Michael Gunter's 'The Kurds and the Future of Turkey' deals with Turkey's treatment of Kurds residing in that country. 'The Kurdish Question and Turkish-Iranian Relations' by Robert Olsen studies the impact of the Kurdish problem on the relations between the two countries. The 'Kurdish National Movement in the 1990s' edited by Olsen deals with the politics of the New Democracy Movement.

The 1996 Okinawa referendum on U.S. base reductions: one question, several answers

Article Abstract:

The results of a nonbinding referendum held in the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa on Sep 8, 1996 on whether or not the Japan-United States Status of Forces Agreement of 1960 should be reviewed and whether or not American bases should be reduced reveal a surprisingly low number of eligible voters who answered in the affirmative. While 89% of participating voters supported a review of the agreement and a reduction in American forces, 40.47% or nearly 910,000 of all eligible voters stayed away from the polls. Only 53% or 482,538 of the electorate agreed with US base reductions.

Several denials and a few confessions: southern poetry and southern journals
