The U.P. Congress and 'Hindu Unity': Untouchables and the minority question in the 1930s

Article Abstract:

Gandhi's movement for untouchable uplift, the broad range of political positions that could be mobilized in support of a unified 'Hindu' nation and how the untouchable uplift movement unleashed discussions about Hindu society are investigated. Untouchable separatism can be characterized as a battle against religious unification.

The rise of Hindu nationalism in India: The case study of Ahmedabad in the 1980s

Article Abstract:

Studies show the rise and nature of communalism since the mid-1980s, the militant Hindu nationalism and the recurring communal violence in Ahmedabad and throughout Gujarat. The growth of communalism and militant Hinduism after 1985 had its seeds in the concrete social transformations in caste and class among the Hindus.
