The United States and Asia in 1996: under renovation, but open for business

Article Abstract:

US-Asian relations were tumultuous in 1996. For instance, US and China conflicted over Taiwan at the beginning of the year, but this was followed by high-level policy discussions between the Chinese defense minister and US officials. US-Japanese relations were also strained but had improved considerably. America's Asian policy lacked clarity during Pres. Clinton's first term in office, but has shown some measure of closure at the end of 1996.

India and Singapore: forging economic linkages in the post-Cold War world

Article Abstract:

Strategic economic cooperation between India and Singapore can be further enhanced by institutional linkages. The recent formation of the India Business Interaction Group in Singapore and the opening of a Singapore Trade Development Board office in Madras, India, are encouraging indications that bilateral relations between the two countries are improving. Stronger relations between India and Singapore will continue in the post-Cold War era.

Economic cooperation in Southeast Asia: changing incentives

Article Abstract:

The Assn. of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been less successful in promoting economic cooperation among its member states. With the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA), however, ASEAN members are hopeful that the current trend will be reversed. To be truly effective in integrating ASEAN economy, AFTA requires that member states implement intraregional liberalization fully and on schedule.
