'The Vanishing American': Hollywood's compromise to Indian reform

Article Abstract:

George Seitz's silent movie, 'The Vanishing American,' represents one of the US film industry's few attempts to deal forthrightly with white exploitation of American Indians. The film is effective not only in depicting the abuses of the reservation system but in revealing society's inability to resolve its 'Indian problem.' However, the film's appeal to Christianity emerges as an empty endorsement of racial assimilation. The film was adapted from a 1922 story by Zane Grey, who often depicted Indians as victims of white greed and mistreatment.

Imaging nationalism in the Cold War: the foundation of the American National Portrait Gallery

Article Abstract:

The American National Portrait Gallery was established in 1968 to celebrate the achievements of individual Americans in a way that prevented the then widespread revolutionary agitation from undermining contemporary US society. By confining the display of portraits chiefly to traditional white, male heroes and largely excluding women and minorities, the Portrait Gallery attempted to shore up the hierarchical structure of US society by depriving culture and portraiture of political content.
