The battle of feminism and 'bon usage:' instituting nonsexist usage in French

Article Abstract:

Reasons why efforts to reduce gender-bias in the French language have met with such resistance range from French society's inherent sexism and the grammatical limits of the French gender system to a construct of beliefs and subjective feelings about French called 'le bon usage' that resists any kind of change in the language. Other reasons are universal, such as the androcentrism of most cultures and the difficulty of changing ingrained linguistic habits.
