The composition of the nineteenth-century political elite of pre-colonial Nguyen Vietnam (1802-1883)

Article Abstract:

Alexander Woodside in his 1971 book 'Vietnam and the Chinese Model,' has distorted the historical dynamic of the 19th century in addition to contradicting his own evidences regarding the composition of the political elites. According to the statistical evidence the political elites consisted largely of men from Hue and neighbouring provinces plus southerners and northern Trung-ky examination graduates. The history of 19th century Vietnam can be properly understood if put in proper chronological and geographical perspectives.
