The second 'women's war' and the emergence of democratic government in Manipur

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the role of Meitei women in the democratization of Manipur before it was absorbed into the Indian state. The authors, stating Meitei women held high social and economic status compared with other Indian women, maintains they organized a mass protest against economic exploitation during the mid 20th century which ultimately grew into a successful political reform movement.

Hyderabad is the most important princely state that provides a counter-narrative to Indian nationalism. It's indirect rule status allowed it to chase its own dynamic well into the twentieth century.
