Timor-Leste in 2006: The end of the post-independence honeymoon

Article Abstract:

Timor-Leste in 2006 was in turmoil as violence claimed dozens of lives and polarized much of the country along geographical lines. Independence gained after Indonesian invasion and occupation was undermined by international military intervention and a change in government that made the already bad socioeconomic situation worse.

Timor-Leste: divided leadership in a semi-presidential system

Article Abstract:

The semi-presidential system in the state of Timor-Leste has polarized alliances and threatens the viability of the new state. The ideological divisions and the history of rivalry between the President, Xanana Gusmao, and the Prime Minister, Mari Alkatiri, are analyzed.

Generations, legitimacy, and political ideas in China: the end of polarization or the end of ideology?

Article Abstract:

The relationship between political ideas and influence of biographical learning on political orientation is studied. The analysis is based on interviews conducted during 1994-2001 and study of writings of intellectuals of the ex-Red Guard and Zhiqing generation.
