20,000 lies under the sea: the fishy world of Jacques Cousteau

Article Abstract:

Jacques Cousteau became internationally renowned and admired for his devotion to animals and the sea and his commitment to environmental issues. However, reservations began to be expressed about his treatment of animals and of his family even before he died in 1997. His organizations, l'Equipe Cousteau in France and the Cousteau Society in the US, have suffered considerable financial instability, partly because of the very obscure nature of his finances. Some reports indicate that he shared some of the racist views of his brother, who was jailed as a traitor to France.

No cachet in a Gachet

Article Abstract:

The Grand Palais in Paris, France, is currently staging an exhibition of paintings undertaken by Vincent Van Gogh in the final weeks of his life. This exhibition has served to revive controversy about whether Van Gogh himself actually painted all these works, or whether some were undertaken by Dr Paul Gachet, Van Gogh's doctor. The curators of the exhibition have included some paintings known to be by Gachet and his son, and hope in this way to prove that the disputed paintings, although possibly below Van Gogh's usual quality, could not have been painted by Gachet.
