America's man to save world finances

Article Abstract:

World economic growth is likely to be substantially lower than it has been in the recent past, according to US Treasury Deputy Secretary Lawrence Summers. He emphasizes the challenges associated with ensuring that the US is not the only force for economic growth in the world. He feels that both Europe and Japan must focus on domestic, demand-led growth, and that macro-economic policies must play a significant role in this process. He believes that the basic momentum of US economic growth should be maintained, although there will be some fluctuations.

How the US should prevent a global meltdown

Article Abstract:

Economic growth in the US will have to slow down to a more sustainable level, according to a report from the International Monetary Fund. This report calls on the Federal Reserve to be proactive in its use of interest rates to control domestic demand growth and thus reduce the danger of a hard landing. However, it is possible that it is already too late to deal with excess demand in the US economy. This is reflected in the over-valuation of share prices and in the trade deficit.
