40m pounds sterling prize from lottery gives British sport its biggest ever win

Article Abstract:

Funding for sport in the UK is set to receive a dramatic boost under a new scheme launched by the government. The World Class Performance Programme will involve funding going to up to 4,500 competitors, who will share 20 million pounds sterling a year in annual individual grants from National Lottery funds. There will also be a further 20 million pounds sterling for sport governing organisations. The scheme has been warmly welcomed as playing an important role in boosting the confidence of UK competitors.

Diane Modahl, the former Commonwealth 800-metres champion, has successfully appealed against a four-year ban imposed in 1994 after tests indicated extensive testosterone abuse. However, she still faces further arbitration, and feels that her reputation has been permanently damaged. She has tried to regain her confidence through studying and writing her autobiography.
