Can good emerge from the evil of the Omagh bomb?

Article Abstract:

The terrorist bombing of Omagh, Northern Ireland, has united both republicans and unionists against violence and made politicians from all sides more determined to pursue the peace deal. Republican leader Gerry Adams and unionist leader David Trimble both publicly condemned the bombing by the Real IRA. The previous bombing of Enniskillen in 1987 by the IRA resulted in the organisation's fragmentation, with the Real IRA likely to experience a similar impact following widespread public revulsion of its activities.

Report that will not withstand scrutiny

Article Abstract:

The Widgery report into the Bloody Sunday event in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, in 1972, in which 14 civilians were shot by the British Army, is now accepted to be inadequate. It is extremely short, and was produced in only 11 weeks. Its assessment of the individual casualties covers only seven pages, and no attempt is made to precisely reconstruct each killing. Recent revelations indicate that the report's statement that paratroops gave detailed and uncontradictory evidence is incorrect.
