Landfill sites linked to risk of birth defects

Article Abstract:

Landfill sites for hazardous waste could be a cause of congenital birth defects and low birth weight, according to research commissioned by the UK Dept of Health. A survey of birth defects in more than 8.2 million babies born close to 9,565 landfill sites operating between 1982 and 1997 shows that the rate of babies with a low birth rate was 5% higher than anticipated.
