50,000 defy China to remember Tiananmen

Article Abstract:

A rally held in Victoria Park, Hong Kong, to mark the 8th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989 attracted up to 55,000 Hong Kong residents. Many have expressed their determination to uphold democratic rights in Hong Kong when it comes under Chinese sovereignty. Some key figures in the democracy movement have even gone as far as to state that civil disobedience may be required if Hong Kong is to continue to support the democracy movement in China. Those attending the rally called for the release of dissidents and an end to single party dictatorship.

Tycoons shift allegiance as Britain's power wanes

Article Abstract:

The influence of top business leaders in Hong Kong has waned slightly in recent years as a new generation of elected politicians and professionals has emerged. However, China has ensured that business leaders have played a key role in preparations for the handover of power, and they are set to be extremely influential in post-British Hong Kong. China has rewarded long-standing business supporters with top posts in the new administration, and has also recognised trade unionists and professionals.
