A Bill that dared not speak its name

Article Abstract:

Homosexuality was still a great social taboo in the UK in the 1960s, and it proved extremely difficult to persuade enough politicians to support the Bill which led to the 1967 Sexual Offences Act, under which consensual sex in private for men over 21 was legalized. Homosexual culture has become more widely accepted since this legislation was implemented, but there is still considerable suspicion surrounding practising homosexuals, especially those in public life. Successive governments have taken an inconsistent line on homosexuality, and there is still a firm belief among large sections of the population that homosexual sex is wrong.

Judge with impeccable reactionary credentials

Article Abstract:

William Hubbs Rehnquist, Chief Justice of the US, will preside over any full impeachment trial in the Senate of President Bill Clinton that would take place in early 1999. He is a committed conservative, and is widely regarded as a specialist on the US constitution. He is known to be unsympathetic towards claims by Clinton of executive privilege to hamper the investigations undertaken by special prosecutor Kenneth Starr. Some observers believe that he will be a secret weapon for those wishing to remove Clinton from office.
