A New Deal, but old money, for Lone Parents

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom government has introduced its New Deal for Lone Parents which aims to encourage lone parents to find paid work. The scheme provides advice to lone parents on benefits they are entitled to when in work, as well and help with training courses and child care. Some lone parents have already tried working and note that the costs can be higher than expected, with travel expenses and the like. The benefits available tend not to be generous and the bureaucracy is complicated. Yet the scheme has advantages because it is based on encouraging lone parents rather than complusion.

At a theatre near you: the tragedy of misdirected lottery funding

Article Abstract:

Money raised by the UK's National Lottery can only be used to fun new arts projects. This means that many existing local theatres, such as the Greenwich Theatre and Gate Theatre in London, England, are now facing closure. The government arts budget has been reduced by 20 million pounds sterling since 1994, and 100 small performing arts companies have closed since 1992. It was wise to ensure that the government cannot use lottery money to balance out a reduced arts budget, but this has now created a significant distortion in arts spending policy.

Over the Haagen-Dazs the talk is all of the end of poverty

Article Abstract:

The key theme at the UK Labour party's 1997 annual conference has been the abolition of poverty. There is strong emphasis on helping members of the 'underclass' to re-enter mainstream society. Almost every government department is involved in this vision, producing a wide range of ideas and plans. The government is taking a considerable risk in focusing on poverty, as it must address expensive and deep-seated social problems.
