A book-end career

Article Abstract:

It is often said in the cinema world that great books do not make great films, but director Volker Schlondorff has proved this wrong in his case. So often the presence of the great writer overshadows the creativeness of the director to restrict him. Schlondorff has overcome this in a number of successes including Proust's Swann in Love, the only Proust that has been made into a film. He says he finds most screenplays sub-standard although he does not know why in many cases.

Crimes or misdemeanours?

Article Abstract:

The scandal over Woody Allen's love affair with his step-daughter Soon-Yi which has resulted in Mia Farrow suing him for $7 million means that Allen's public image as seen through his films is being condemned by the media. Allen is unhappy with his image and would like to be seen as a reclusive. The public mind has already defined his character as portrayed in his film Manhatten when he has an affair with a 17 year old.

Fragments of love and death

Article Abstract:

French film director Francois Truffaut began his career in the cinema as a critic who spoke out strongly against traditional French films. However, his own films contain no innovative elements, and has few clear links with other film directors of the French New Wave of the 1960s. All his films are about love in various forms, and all feature beautiful women. They are all autobiographical to a certain extent.
