Science and God: the Archbishop's reply

Article Abstract:

The Archbishop of York responds to Richard Dawkin's scientific argument against God ay of thinking. Facts and their interpretation are philosophy rather than science or religion. Science investigates natural phenomena, while religion attempts to identify the condition behind those phenomena and relate it to existence. The American philosopher William James implied that religious people have survival capacity. Knowledge is not all scientific and biological criteria cannot be applied to non-biological affairs. Even scientific knowledge belongs within a historical context. Knowledge of people is more direct than knowledge of genes or stars.

Marginal differences may foster a vicious campaign

Article Abstract:

The political parties have similar commitments, only differing where they draw the lines. This indicates a vicious campaign as they will feel more threatened by their opponents. Moral aspirations such as multi-culturalism are neglected in elections. Equality between different groups is different from the tolerant acceptance of minorities within a dominant culture. Larger social groupings versus reassertion of local and national identities conflict. Green issues are discussed but politicians may not look far enough ahead.

The meaning of life - and death

Article Abstract:

The Pope is undoubtedly very sincere in focusing his latest encyclical, 'Evangelium Vitae,' on protecting life against 'the culture of death.' However, some concern is being expressed about the details of his views. Many observers believe that moral differences should be drawn between embryo research, abortion, euthanasia and capital punishment, as in biological terms they deal with very different issues. The Pope should show greater biological insight if his views are to have real influence.
