A capital vision - from Spain

Article Abstract:

The city of Barcelona, Spain, is widely regarded as a model of urban regeneration and modern civic pride, according to its mayor, Pasqual Maragall. It has successfully combined large and small projects, and has taken a rational view of its assets and liabilities. It has developed a clear strategy, and has focused particularly on regenerating areas on the periphery of the city and linking them with the centre. He believes that it is vital that mayors are aware of the wishes of ordinary people.

Spain's fears for a new civil war

Article Abstract:

The run-up to Spain's general election, which is to take place on Mar 03, 1996, has been characterised by renewed violence by Basque nationalist group Eta. Two killings have prompted fear and anger among ordinary people throughout the country, and are now calling for tougher measures to be used against Eta. The Basque region has already gained a high degree of autonomy, but Eta is determined to pursue its cause even further.

Spain - the new sick man of Europe

Article Abstract:

The Spanish government has been forced to devalue the peseta for the fourth time in two and a half years, and may eventually have to withdraw from the European exchange rate mechanism. This would be particularly damaging for a government which has placed great emphasis on European unity. Spain's economy saw rapid growth in the second half of the 1980s, but has recently been hit by recession and corruption scandals.
