A case of middle-of-the-road rage

Article Abstract:

Capital Radio, the largest local radio station in the UK, has purchased independent rock music station XFM. The latter station became known for its eclectic style and music-led programming when it broadcast occasionally before launching full time in Sep 1997, and became extremely influential, especially in relation to Radio One. Its sale to Capital Radio has been greeted with concern by many music professionals, who feel that the cutting edge approach that characterized XFM will be lost.

Capital reaches the age of dissent

Article Abstract:

There are many problems associated with the relationship between the BBC and commercial radio, according to Capital Radio Director of Programmes Richard Park. He believes that the BBC focuses on doing things that the commercial sector could do just as well. Furthermore, when faced with competition from the BBC, commercial radio stations are not on an equal footing. He is calling for the abolition of a points system that restricts the market share of any large commercial radio company.

Capital dials F for fun

Article Abstract:

Capital Radio is seeking to operate a new regional FM frequency in the north-east. This would be used for Fun Radio, targeting children from pre-school age up to the early teenage years. There would be at least three records requested by children in each hour, and the station would also feature many phone-ins, on-air competitions and prizes. There would also be more serious programmes, but these would not be overtly educational in tone.
