A century of glossy squirearchy

Article Abstract:

Country Life magazine, which is currently celebrating its centenary, has from the very beginning been characterised by country house advertising. The magazine is the main advertising outlet for country houses, and this has ensured that it has been able to appear weekly throughout its 100 year history. It is likely that Country Life will continue to be published for as long as there is demand for country houses. The magazine unashamedly focuses on a certain sector of the UK population, but is also very readable and sometimes interesting.

Hindu nationalist chief left in limbo as electoral alliance falls to pieces

Article Abstract:

The Indian political scene remains extremely unsettled. Congress, the United Front and the two main communist parties lack the power required to form a government, while AB Vajpayee, parliamentary leader of the Hindu nationalist BJP, cannot become prime minister because he lacks the support of former film star Jayalalitha, who has served as chief minister of Tamil Nadu. Despite extensive efforts over many years, Vajpayee has been unable to gain the broad national support required to form a stable government.

Out of the Far East and in your face ...

Article Abstract:

The recent announcement of plans by LG to create a semiconductor fabrication plant in Wales, where around 6,000 people will be employed, has drawn attention to South Korea and its culture in the UK. Most British people have little idea of what South Korea is really like. It is important to realise that South Korea is not the same as Japan, even though the two countries' histories are closely linked. Its culture has yet to make a mark in Europe, unlike that of Japan.
