Appearance and reality in the land of opportunity

Article Abstract:

There is a very strong drive among Americans for self-improvement. Everybody seems to crave attention, and society has become very competitive. This means that some people have been tempted to add events to their life history that did not actually take place. Pulitzer prize winner Janet Cooke, for example, claimed to have studied at Vassar College, while Vice-President Al Gore claimed that he was the model for the hero of Erich Segal's 'Love Story.' It is extremely common for people to greatly enhance their qualifications and experience on their resumes.

Lyons' lion lays out the welcome mat

Article Abstract:

The forthcoming annual summit of the Group of Seven industrialised countries, which is to be held in Lyons, France, will ensure that the city is shown to full advantage, according to Raymond Barre, its mayor. He remains one of France's most respected politicians, and has successfully linked a free-market pro-European attitude with a practical social conscience. He had planned to retire when he was approached to stand as mayor, but has welcomed the challenge of restoring the city to its former glory.

France falls out of love with the Pope

Article Abstract:

The current visit of Pope John Paul II to France has highlighted a number of sensitive issues regarding the position of Catholicism in France. Most French people are baptised and regard themselves as Catholics, but there is a strong view that the state is secular and that there is a clear divide between the church and the state. Many people are very sensitive about any signs of the state authorities associating themselves too closely with the Catholic church.
