Halting this evil trade

Article Abstract:

Trade Records Analysis of Flora and Fauna (TRAFFIC), set up in 1976, works to enforce the 1973 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which controls trade in around 34,000 kinds of animals and plants. TRAFFIC now has bases in 19 countries, and works with police, officials and a range of organisations. It is also responsible for identifying species which are being placed in danger by trade, ensuring that they are brought under the convention.

What future for our cities?

Article Abstract:

The United Nations' forthcoming Habitat II 'city summit' in Istanbul, Turkey, will attract representatives from 134 countries. Its main aim will be to set down an international strategy for dealing with the rapid urbanisation of the world's population. There are now almost 300 cities of more than 1 million people, and there will be more than 570 within two decades. By the end of the 1990s, more people will be living in towns and cities than in the country.

Working with the locals

Article Abstract:

WWF has for many years been emphasising the importance of involving local people in environmental protection schemes. In Namibia, for example, numbers of rhino and elephant in the far north-west of the country have doubled since local people were included in a project to protect these animals. In Brazil, the organisation is working with local people in the flooded forest of the Amazon, where some areas have now been set aside for complete protection.
