A country brought low by horror

Article Abstract:

The discovery of a paedophile ring in Belgium is having an impact far beyond the residents of the village of Sars-la-Buissiere, where Marc Dutroux, the head of the ring, lived. Many Belgians feel that top officials covered up the ring, and there are even rumours of Mafia links and international trade in child sex. There has been a particular outcry after claims that the ring could have been linked with Andre Cools, a former deputy prime minister who was murdered in 1991.

Leaders to push for fresh EMU momentum

Article Abstract:

The summit of European Union leaders currently being held in Madrid, Spain, will highlight deep divisions and uncertainty about the future of Europe. The UK is expected to attempt to reduce the pace of further integration, and France and Germany have also been obliged to scale down their plans. Despite this, leaders will make efforts to set a clearer timetable for European Union reform and enlargement.

Arc of influence puts nations in the shade

Article Abstract:

The 32 regions which make up Europe's Atlantic seaboard have a great deal in common, and are now starting to forge strong links. They have set up the Atlantic Arc association, which brings together local politicians and regional bureaucrats. This may eventually serve to shift the balance of power in Europe, encouraging people to think in new ways about links with their neighbours.
