A troubadour of history

Article Abstract:

The three elements in flamenco music are the singing, the guitar and the dance, according to flamenco guitarist Juan Martin. He seeks his own form of new flamenco by returning the music to its origins. He is happy for his music to be performed in a concert-hall context, even though this is very different from the environment in which flamenco is performed in Spain. He is to perform on May 30, 1998, in London, England, at the opening concert of the South Bank Centre's Arte Flamenco festival.

In tune with the times

Article Abstract:

The plays of Friedrich Schiller held strong appeal for Verdi, who wrote four operates based directly on Schiller's work. The confrontational nature of Schiller's plays makes them very suited to being converted into opera, which requires directness. Verdi was not born until a few years after Schiller's death, but the two man inhabited largely similar worlds, and both had great ambition and talent.

Don't mention the monks

Article Abstract:

Anonymous 4, a group of women who came together in 1986 to perform medieval a cappella music, have been extremely successful. They have particularly benefited from the widening of the definition of classical music over recent years, with different forms of music now becoming popular. Audiences report that medieval music is a very helpful aid to contemplation.
