Arts 2000: is this another piece in the puzzle?

Article Abstract:

Shell's Downstream Building on the river Thames in London is now up for sale, and is under offer from a consortium which plans to convert it into a centre for the performing arts. This would bring the building into line with wider plans for the area, which is to be revived with National Lottery funding. The project could be completed before the end of the 1990s, and may include the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, the British Film Institute and the National Film and Television School.

Staying on

Article Abstract:

There has been no cause for concern since the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong to China, according to David Atherton, Music Director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic. He has no reservations about the agreement he has made to work under Chinese rule until Sep 2000, and points out that there have been very few changes to the management of the orchestra. Money is the most influential factor in Hong Kong, and the arts are given relatively little attention.

Little beggars' opera

Article Abstract:

The opera house at Glyndebourne, England, is closely associated with traditional operas. However, it is now to make a departure from this mould by staging its first children's opera. This opera, entitled 'Misper,' is set both in a scholar's library in medieval China and in a modern teenage environment in the UK. It is based on three community operas staged by the company over recent years, and its cast is mainly made up of children.
