Canny investment has given us an edge in the global economy

Article Abstract:

The UK has been increasing its net assets despite running a current account deficit, according to a survey by the Bank of England of the net asset positions of German, France, the UK, the US and Japan. This is because changes in relative exchange rates and the relative investment investment performance of the portfolios have an impact on net assets. The UK saw a surplus of more than 10 billion pounds sterling in earnings from foreign investments in 1994, with most of this coming from the surplus on direct investment.

The safer things get, the more we want to risk

Article Abstract:

Modern society as a whole is constantly looking to reduce risk, and this is why there is great concern about issues such as genetic engineering. However, individuals are still prepared to take considerable risks, and will therefore continue to drive cars, smoke and ride bicycles. It seems that people worry far less about the risks they feel they can control, such as accidents in the home, than about those over which they have no control, such as the destruction of the ozone layer.

Start writing a different chapter

Article Abstract:

The collapse of the Net Book Agreement will bring many changes for the book trade. Book prices will come down, forcing retailers to experiment and allowing discount stores to emerge. The trade is likely to become much more diverse, possibly with mail order services offering rapid delivery being created. Books will take a more mainstream place in society as they start to become available through new outlets, such as supermarkets.
