A wet rodent in wolf's clothing

Article Abstract:

There have been mixed reactions to plans detailed in a recent 'Scottish Natural Heritage' journal for the reintroduction of the beaver to Scotland. Some conservationists have welcomed this move, and conservation organisations and individual landowners have made many offers of potential breeding sites. However, others fear that the beaver may have a negative impact on the environment, possibly depleting fish stocks, and others believe that the reintroduction of the beaver may be followed by the reintroduction of species which could cause even worse problems, such as the wild boar.

Climb the winter peaks, but heed the ptarmigan

Article Abstract:

People who climb mountains in extreme winter weather conditions and get into difficulties, needing the services of a mountain rescue team, are often criticised for being foolish and costing taxpayers a lot of money. However, mountain rescue teams are very understanding, realising that it can be very exciting to climb in winter weather. Climbers should certainly be prepared to turn back if their abilities do not match up to the conditions, and should ensure that they train first on the easier climbs.

The eagle has landed in the glen

Article Abstract:

There has been a very strong effort to protect the nesting sites of a pair of golden eagles in the Scottish Highlands. These sites had been robbed of their eggs for a number of years, so volunteers were called in to guard the site chosen by the pair in 1995. This has been extremely successful, with eggs hatching for the first time in almost 10 years. Efforts are now being made to ensure that the remaining eaglet continues to thrive.
