Unthinkable in the USSR. Unstageable today?

Article Abstract:

Russian playwright and novelist Mikhail Bulgakov was praised by Stalin for his early play 'The White Guard,' even though censors thought that it portrayed a White counter-revolutionary family too sympathetically. However, Stalin banned Bulgakov's 'Flight' in 1928, dismissing it as an anti-Soviet phenomenon. Bulgakov was put under great pressure by the Soviet authorities throughout the rest of his life, and his health was destroyed by the associated nervous strain. His work is now enjoying a revival.

Making a drama out of a crisis

Article Abstract:

The UK's regional repertory theatres realise that they must take risks in order to ensure revitalisation, but they are also aware that taking risks could cause them to close down altogether, as they are extremely short of funds. Collaboration arrangements allow them to spreak the risks, and are now becoming increasingly popular. In fact, there are signs that economic necessity is being turned into artistic opportunity, with theatre becoming more vital than ever.
