Contemplating complaints

Article Abstract:

The Solicitors Complaints Bureau must work closely with solicitors to establish how complaints about the conduct of solicitors can be properly and effectively handled within the next 10 years, according to Veronica Lowe, the bureau's director. A new report from the bureau for the Law Society looks at the problems and suggests a number of possible solutions. These include abolishing the bureau, with complaints being handled by the Law Society, setting up a network of regional complaints bodies and making the bureau independent of the Law Society.

Should we change the rules of this club?

Article Abstract:

Labour party leader Tony Blair made a promise in 1994 that his party would introduce legislation to end the voting rights of hereditary peers. However, this issue has now faded into the background. There are certainly strong arguments in favour of reform of the House of Lords, which has traditionally had strained relations with Labour governments. The Labour party faces a dilemma on this issue, as making the House of Lords more democratic would bring greater risks of it clashing with the House of Commons.

Free agent for justice

Article Abstract:

The UK's Court Service, established in Apr 1995, is an agency created out of the section of the Lord Chancellor's Department which ran the courts. The move was undertaken in order to separate the management of courts from the policy and other areas of activity of the Lord Chancellor's Department. It has attracted considerable criticism, particularly because of the high initial costs involved.
