High technology fails to weaken the lure of London's Square Mile

Article Abstract:

Financial services activities in the UK remain focused on the City of London, even though latest technology makes it possible to undertake deals anywhere. Indeed, the City as a place has in fact become more important as technology has made its activities less tangible. Some operations which were traditionally undertaken in London have been moved, such as back offices and registrars. However, high value added functions are still based in London and are become more concentrated as more foreign banks establish operations in the Square Mile.

The UK government is introducing the practice of resource accounting for the public sector. This will be tested internally in 1999 and fully introduced by 2000. It will involve the use of private sector business accounting principles, with an operating statement and balance sheet being drawn up for each department. The new standards will be monitored by a Financial Reporting Advisory Board.
