High libido on the Lido

Article Abstract:

A number of the films shown at the 1999 Venice Film Festival highlight new approaches to the portrayal of sex in films. These include 'Une Liaison Pornographique,' by Belgian director Frederic Fonteyne, and 'Buddy Boy,' by Mark Hanlon. Davide Ferrario's 'Guardami' shows a range of sexual permutations, but does not make a very clear point about the sex industry. Korean director Jang Sun Woo's 'Gojitmal' shows an obsessive and increasingly sado-masochistic sexual relationship, but is also designed to contain elements of humour.

Anna Maria Ortese

Article Abstract:

Writer Anna Maria Ortese became acquainted with a group of young writers based around the review Sud when her family moved to Naples, Italy, in 1945. She was to portray this literary clique with considerable irony in the epilogue of 'Il mare non bagna Napoli,' her most famous collection of stories. She avoided the literary salons of post-war Italy, preferring to remain close to her family. She produced an average of one book every three years, but never gained financial independence.

The highlight is a collection of drawings, cartoons, dream sketches and film storyboards which have never been seen before in public.
