Celluloid symphonies

Article Abstract:

Film music composer James Horner is fully convinced that music can transform drama, rather than merely supporting it. He regards the fusion of music and drama as extremely creative, and remains very enthusiastic about the impact music can have on cinema audiences. He acknowledges that some Hollywood directors care little about music, and for this reason he is very careful about choosing his films and his collaborators. The importance of trust between the composer and the director was seen in Horner's work on the film 'Titanic.'

Knowing a hit from a hole in the ground

Article Abstract:

Composer/lyricist Adam Guettel, grandson of Richard Rodgers, believes that his tendency to compose through his voice can be a liability. In the musical 'Floyd Collins,' he sought to capture the unique quality of bluegrass music. He feels that his music is now tending to become simpler, and he recognizes that he does not need to impose complex music on his singers or his audiences. He seeks to give his music integrity, but admits to being concerned about commercial viability.

Ted's excellent adventure

Article Abstract:

Hyperion Records has seen a constant rise in sales since it was founded in 1980, and it now holds a share of the UK classical music market which is much larger than would be expected for a small company. It focuses on making high quality records in areas which are not attractive to other record companies, according to founder Ted Perry. He has varied musical tastes, but has a highly respected talent for spotting the best artists.
