Alien invasion

Article Abstract:

Very large numbers of migrant birds arrive in the UK in spring. This makes it a very interesting time of year for bird-watchers, who can see many different species nesting, displaying and hunting. It is a good time of year to try to spot the UK's 20 breeding raptors, most of which are usually difficult to find. Those visiting high moorland may wish to look for red and black grouse, while those walking along river banks will probably see kingfishers.

'Poaching salmon's not thieving - rustling sheep is thieving: you can't put them on the same scale.' (views of a poacher)

Article Abstract:

Poachers tend to feel that taking animals such as fish, rabbits and birds is not really stealing, as they believe that wild animals of this kind should be available to anyone who wants to take them. It takes a lot of practice to become an accomplished poacher, and there are always techniques to learn. Poachers are finding it harder now that latest technology, such as microchips, is being used to prevent them taking animals.

Burning trees is good for you

Article Abstract:

Some farmers in the UK are now reviving the traditional art of coppicing, believing that growing and burning wood to generate electricity can play a role in reducing consumption of fossil fuels, thus helping in the fight against global warming. They point out that trees take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and are a renewable source of energy. They also provide shelter for wildlife while they are growing.
