Article Abstract:

Many people are under a great deal of pressure, and this is the reason behind a lot of the evil in the world, according to novelist A.L. Kennedy. She often portrays characters who experience pain and are rather depressive, but is not herself cynical about love and trust. Many of her stories are surreal in a very individual way, and some deal with obsessive, self-induced pain. She has won many prizes for her work, and has scripted a number of films.

Justine Frischmann, leader singer of pop group Elastica, has become the most significant female cult sex symbol in the UK. She has written many songs for the group, most of which are characterised by being unusually short, as she feels that most pop songs last too long and become boring. The group has also attracted attention for its sexual image, as it aims to be modern but not overtly female.

Disco music singer Billie Ray Martin first began singing as a small child, when it offered her the chance to establish her own identity. She sees songwriting as an important therapy, and to some people her voice has healing qualities. She has elements of enigma and candour which are rare in a pop star, and has been likened to Marlene Dietrich.
